Fleas
Dog, cat, oriental, and human fleas are the main pest fleas in domestic situations. Fleas have a wide host range, feeding on cats, dogs, humans, and other animals. They can bite and cause painful swelling and are one of the most significant conveyers of diseases to humans and also some animals. Fleas can and have spread the Bubonic Plague, Murine, Endemic Typhus, intestinal parasites, and flea allergy dermatitis.
Ants
Ants feed on a wide range of foods, from those found in homes to the sugary excretions from plant bugs. They are the most frequently encountered insects in and around the average home. They can infect food, cause painful bites, and damage property. There are many different species, each having differing food preferences and habits. Therefore, their identification is important to determine the control procedure.
Bed bugs
The bed bug has been a pest of humans for thousands of years. Their blood sucking bites often cause severe irritation and allergic reactions. Infestations have been more prevalent in hotels, motels and buildings where sleeping facilities exist. They live in cracks and crevices in furniture near beds and in parts of mattresses. Bed bugs may be carried from sites of infestation in luggage, on clothing, or in furniture.
Silverfish
Several species of silverfish enter houses and infest areas where starchy materials such as paper, books, and fabric are stored. They also occur in roof voids. They are often found fallen into baths and sinks, for they cannot climb smooth surfaces. Foods kept in kitchen areas should be kept in sealed containers, and crumbs and scraps cleaned up, to reduce the suitability of that environment to silverfish.
Carpet beetles
Carpet beetles (black or variegated) are common pests of articles of animal origin in homes. The larvae feed on carpets, underfelt, fur products, wool, silk and hair. They will also feed on dried meat products, cereals and dried insects. Cut flowers to be used in houses should be examined for carpet beetles, as this is a significant cause of their distribution. Soiled clothing, even if of synthetic fibres, should be washed before storage. They are strong fliers and spread quickly from one area to another.sh.
Clothes moths
Not all moths are fabric pests. The case-making clothes moth and the webbing clothes moth attack materials mainly of animal origin such as woollens, felts and furs. Their larvae can do extensive damage to carpets, clothing, and stored food products.
Cockroaches
They are the most common commercial and household pests found in Perth and the rest of Australia. Over the years certain species of cockroaches have co-habited with humans in areas such as homes, ships, food production, and storage facilities. Some inhabit sewer systems, drains, and compost used for the garden. They also have contact with animal and human faeces, and contaminated foods; they transfer these organisms on their bodies and in their faeces to food which is being prepared for human consumption. Many human diseases have been found in and on the bodies of cockroaches. The most favoured areas in homes for cockroaches are kitchens, bathrooms, roof cavities, subfloor areas, and wall cavities.
Rats and mice
There are three rodent pests found in houses in Australia, and all are introduced species. They are the Norway rat, the roof rat and the house mouse. Rats and mice require food and shelter like most animals, and these are provided in buildings, particularly during autumn and winter when they enter houses. Rats and mice are very good climbers and are able to ascend rough walls, pipes, trees and vines, and walk across cables from one structure to another. They often make their nests in wall cavities, roof voids, and subfloor areas. Mostly active at night, rats and mice eat a wide range of foods. Because of the diseases they carry, rats and mice contaminate food, usually the result of faecal, urine and fur contamination. They often bite sleeping children and adults, causing rat bite fever. They also cause physical damage by gnawing timbers, furniture, and various articles in the house. Electrical wiring has been damaged in this way, resulting in house fires.
Lawn beetles
Lawn beetles cause brown patches in the lawn. Unfortunately the beetle begins life as a grub which lives under the grass, eating away at the roots where you can’t see them.
Redback spider
The female redback spider is extremely poisonous, and the bite is followed by extreme agony. It has a black velvety body with a red stripe on the upper surface of the abdomen. It makes loose, untidy webs among leaves, rubbish, under houses, in tins, tyres, stacked articles, fence capping, flower pots, and outdoor furniture.
