SPIDER BITE - FIRST AID

 

TREATMENT

  • Do not use a tourniquet or restrictive bandage.

  • Do not incise or excise the bite

  • Keep patient as quiet as possible.

  • Apply ice packs (not direct freezing) to reduce pain.

  • Seek medical aid at any major hospital where anti-venom will be administered if symptoms are severe. 

 

The bite of any spider, even if non-venomous, should receive medical attention, as blood poisoning or tetanus could result from the bite on rare occasions.





THE FACTS ARE.....

Redback Spider - Breeds in old rubbish such as tins, pots, drums, or any hollow vessel. It is sometimes found in stacks of timber, brambles or debris. The bite is followed by extreme agony, cyanosis (blue-colouring - imperfectly oxygenated blood), dizziness, chills and sometimes death.

PREVENTION......

  • Examine garden tools before use.

  • Check outdoor toilets and letter- boxes.

  • Take care when removing capping from fences

SYMPTOMS......

  • Intense localised pain, swelling and sweating starts five minutes after a the bite.

  • Pain and swelling may be experienced in the body after about half  an hour.

  • After about one hour, headache, nausea and vomiting may occur. Profuse sweating is common.
